Many of my drawings are organically inspired. The subject matter is closely observed, usually under a magnifying glass, so that I can understand the varying textures and construction. At this point in my research I make many detailed sketches to ascertain shape, tone and texture. The finished drawings evolve out of these sketches and usually show little resemblance to the original object, but have many of its characteristics.
I have experimented with drawing and mark making on a variety of grounds. I have used watercolour, graphite and pencil on paper, white pencil on black paper and I have also used sandpaper as the ground for a particular series of works that exploited the use of mark making.
